- The story takes place in 2021, ten years after Graduation, the Season Four finale of The Vampire Diaries.
- To reflect the time jump, certain characters from The Vampire Diaries will be recast.
- Caroline Forbes is confirmed to make an appearance somewhere in this season.
- The Founder's Council is now called The Secret Council, following the election of a non-founding family member for mayor.
- All of the original vampires, including Klaus, are killed. How Stefan survived will remain a mystery for the time being.
