|Misao is walking on a long corridor. Finally she arrives to the end, and knocks the door. A bold woman voice calls from inside.
Voice: "Come in."
Upon this Misao opens the door and walks in. There she sees her, across the room. Her face has remained in the shadow.
Misao: "You wanted to see me, Inari?"
Inari: "Where have you been in the last two days?"
Misao: "In my room."
Inari: (stands up, and her face gets out of the shadow. She seems very angry) "Is that true?"
Misao: "Why would I lie?"
Inari: "Report came from the unit on Earth. They had the bodies in their possessions, but someone with kitsune magic helped the earthlings and now they lost it."
Misao: "Did you find the betrayer?"
Inari: (angrily) "Don't play with me! The spell was cast by you!"
Inari: "Traces of the magic reveal that your power was used to locate the house."
Misao: "This is ridiculous, do you believe that?"
Inari: "Magic never lies."
Misao: "You know that they broke my starball. Without it how can I possibly go to earth, let alone help them with a magic?"
Inari: "I was hoping you would explain that."
Misao: "It wasn't me, Inari."
Inari: "That's impossible."
Misao: "You can read my mind, so lying is pointless. You'll know the truth anyway."
Upon this Inari silently looks at Misao's head, apparently reading her mind.
Inari: "I read a lot of doubt. Will to disobey, search for a weak moment to take me down."
Misao: (feels cornered) "Inari, I'm.."
Inari: (ragefully) "What kind of a fool do you think I am!?"
Misao: (looks down, panting with fear) "I could never betray you. You made sure of that."
Inari: (looks down on Misao) "I'll be watching you. With every breath, every step, until I'm convinced it wasn't you. Now leave!"
Misao is clearly shaken by this conversation, that she stands still for a moment. Then turns around and quietly leaves the room, while her eyes are filled with fear.
Samara knocks the Forbes door. Liz comes to open the door.
Samara: (walks in) "Good morning Mrs. Forbes." (Liz closes the door) "Is Caroline home?"
Liz: "She's having a shower. You can wait inside."
Samara: "Oh, great. I thought I missed her."
Liz: "Do you want some tea while waiting?"
Samara: "Sure, thanks."
They walk to the kitchen.
Liz: "Your bag smells nice."
Samara: (chuckles) "Thanks! We were going to the witch house, so I bought some pastries from the grill."
Liz: "W.. Witch house?"
Samara: "We're gonna try a spell. Might take all day."
Liz: "So that's what all those candles were all about. Caroline took everything in the house!"
Samara: "Did she tell you about the spell?"
Liz: "No, but considering it's at the old witch house where a hundred witches were murdered, I gather it's not good."
Samara doesn't know how to react to this, so she simply smiles and raises her eyebrows.
Bonnie: "How is she doing?"
Elena: "Hope says she doesn't want to talk to anyone."
Hope: "She and Nathan never talked in two days. They used to spend every second together."
Damon: "She's in shock. She thinks she's going to die. I wouldn't expect her to be partying and dancing."
Elena: "But isolating herself? Alienating? Would that help?"
Bonnie: "Elena is right. Look. Nathan's visions come from an alternate future. But the future is not written. So if something is done to interfere, the future would change."
Hope: "Exactly. For all we know, she could be safe right now."
Damon: "Or Nathan's visions come from the exact future, and he saw exactly what would happen, regardless of we interfere or not!"
Suddenly a man loses his balance while passing behind Meredith, and he falls with a huge noise, his plate and spoon hitting the floor and all. Everyone freaks with that, and Meredith gets up rapidly thinking she is in danger, only to see it was an accident that just happened to be behind her. With fear, she hits the man, then runs out as everyone looks at her worried and curiously.
Elena: "This is not good."
Bonnie: "So not good."
Hope: "Yeah, she's always on edge."
Elena: (looks at the other three) "We have to do something. This can't go on like this."
Damon: "So what're you suggesting we should do?"
Elena: "Someone needs to talk to her."
Damon: "Someone would be who? Hope just said it, she's not talking to anyone." (upon this all eyes turn to Damon) "What?"
Elena: "You're the only one she would listen."
Damon: "What am I supposed to say her?"
Elena: "I don't know. Be spontaneous. You said you're good at it."
Bonnie: (while smiling) "Food can wait. It's not like you need to eat it anyway."
Damon rolls his eyes, and Elena and Hope smile.
Damon: (cleans his mouth and gets up) "Whatever. Food was trash anyway."
Hope: (jokingly offended) "Hey!" (Damon quickly smiles to her, then walks to where Meredith went. After he goes a little far..) "Ass!"
Damon: (yells from where he is, as he continues walking) "I heard that!"
Hope looks shocked, as she apparently forgot that Damon has vampire hearing. Then three girls start laughing.
Meredith's door is knocked. Meredith yells from inside.
Meredith: "Go away!" (but regardless, the door is opened) "I said.." (upon seeing it's Damon) "Oh, you."
Damon: (walks inside and closes the door) "Who'd you think I was?"
Meredith: (rolls her eyes, indicating he already knows) "Did she send you?"
Damon: "She's worried about you."
Meredith: "Yeah? She can get in line."
Damon: (sits on her bed) "We're all worried about you."
Damon: "You know our.. Mystic Falls gang."
Meredith: "Except for Klaus."
Damon: "Except for Klaus."
Meredith: (remains silent for a moment) "I don't know what I'm supposed to do." (sits on the bed near Damon) "Do you think I should leave?" (Damon weirdly looks at her) "If I'm putting everyone in danger here. Considering with every passing moment I'm getting closer to my inevitable death.." (Damon fixes his eyes to a random point on the wall) "..and when I die I become a phantom." (looks at him) "What would you do?"
Damon: (remains silent for a moment. He is clearly thinking deeply. Then he talks) "Nathan knows that I killed Scott." (Meredith looks at him interestedly) "And I didn't even tell him. He says one of my future selves told him. He also says, that future self has also killed him." (looks at her) "But none of that happened."
Meredith: "What are you trying to tell me?"
Damon: "I'm saying, his visions doesn't tell the exact future. So for all we know, by staying in your room for three straight days, or punching that guy in the cafeteria.." (Meredith can't help smiling) "..you might have changed the future. You could be safe!"
Meredith: (after a brief silence) "Can I ask you something?" (Damon nods) "How can you bear it?"
Meredith: "I mean, how many times you risked your life for Elena now? Hundred? Thousand? How can you bear it? The pressure. Stress."
Damon: "Mostly uncertainty."
Damon: "There are two options during distress. You live, or you die."
Meredith: (sarcastically) "Inspiring!"
Damon: "When I don't know what's gonna happen, I always have something to fight for: my life, at the least. And when I do know what's gonna happen, I find something that motivates me, something that makes me keep going. That's how I can bear it."
Meredith: "But when you know.." (they remain silent for a while) "I don't know what I have to fight for."
Damon: (looks at her) "Why are you here, Meredith?"
Meredith: (smiles with discomfort) "I came here to save Elena."
Damon: "I know that, but what's in it for you?"
Meredith: "I owe her a life."
Damon: "How come?"
Meredith: "Back at the hospital. Maybe you didn't mean it, but I took it seriously. When you said it was my fault that Elena became a vampire. I gave her vampire blood and didn't tell anyone. If you knew, you wouldn't let her be on that bridge, she wouldn't become a vampire. Because of that, I can't help blaming myself for everything that happened."
Damon: "Do you realize how pathetic that sounds?"
Meredith: "Say what you want Damon. But I came here to find redemption. I thought if I saved Elena, I could clear my conscience and pay my depth, and finally go on living my life."
Damon: "So this is your thing. Redemption."
Meredith: "Yeah. But somehow I don't feel motivated."
Damon: (looks at Meredith sure of himself) "Let me tell you something. If I knew I was gonna die, I'd make sure I say my goodbyes, and I'd try to make the best of whatever time I have left."
Meredith: "You wouldn't get upset, or desperate or anything?"
Damon: "I'd have had a lifetime for that crap, so why spoil the little time I have left? Would you save money for your retirement if you knew you were gonna die in three weeks? Haven't you seen Last Holiday?" (Meredith genuinely smiles upon this) "You're gonna die. So what? Go out there. Have fun. Hang out with those you love. Be with your friends. Don't hold anything back, because these are your last days. If you're gonna die, at least you make sure you live before you do."
They look at each other. This conversation clearly felt good for Meredith.
Tyler: "So how does this work?"
Caroline: "Basically, Samara will harness the power of hundred dead witches and use it to hide the bodies, make'em invisible to, you know, anyone but us."
Katherine: "That's a big spell. Can you cast it?"
Samara: "I'm here to try."
June: "We're here to do a lot more than try. After what happened we can't take chances. We have to do this."
Samara: "Easier said than done, I'll be doing the entire spell."
June: (smiles) "Just like I was back in Richmore."
Samara: (smiles too) "Push your limits, huh?"
Chris: "I know you can do this."
Samara: "Can I?"
Caroline: "Bonnie was able to do it."
Samara: (exhales) "Okay, grimoire."
Caroline: (gets the book out of her bag) "I spent my whole night looking for this, so it'd better worth it."
Samara: (jokingly) "Not if you got the wrong book."
Shortly afterwards Samara starts reading something from the grimoire. After a little while, the fire on candles get freakishly bigger, indicating a powerful spell is in progress. Then creepy voices start being heard everywhere. Samara, apparently putting a great effort, repeats the spell with a higher voice. Her voice soon gets cracked. The creepy voices get louder too. Then suddenly, everything stops, candles burn out, and a creepy silence hits the witch house. Everyone is looking at Samara curiously.
Caroline: "Did it work?"
Samara: (after a brief but disturbing silence) "No."
Samara: (breaths heavily) "They.. They wouldn't let me!"
June: (curiously) "Why?"
Samara: "They said I can't be trusted, because the Bennett line is impure."
Chris: "What the hell does that supposed to mean?"
Caroline: (suddenly figures out) "Dark magic!"
Samara: "They said my family has a big history with dark magic."
Chris: "That doesn't make sense, why do you get the fall for Bonnie's bad?"
Samara: "Because it's not just Bonnie. But also Bonnie's mom, several of our ancestors.." (reluctantly continues) "and my sister."
Katherine: (surprised) "Lucy?"
Tyler: "I thought you said she was ODed!
Samara: "She was. But but not on what you think."
Caroline: (suddenly understands, and speaks with sadness) "Oh!"
Samara: "She always thought our parents favored me over her. That's why she always had this urge, and need to prove herself. Her ambition eventually led her to hang out with wrong crowds." (Katherine looks at her silently, as a little sadness can be seen in her face) "She soon turned to dark magic. I tried to warn her about it. But she told me it's okay. And I thought she's strong enough to handle it." (looks at everyone) "I was wrong. The darkness took her over, got the best of her." (looks around) "Dark magic is what got my sister killed. So yeah, our family is way impure, and definitely the last to trust with that much power."
Caroline: "I'm sorry."
Samara: (tries to smile) "Don't be. You couldn't have known."
Tyler: "Hey it's okay. It just means we'll do it the traditional way."
Samara: (chuckles) "Yeah, we all saw how that worked out."
Chris: "But it'll be different this time. See, we will guard the bodies 7/24."
June: "And with your protection spell and my psychic barriers, no one will get close to them."
Chris: "Don't forget my wings of protection."
June: "Of course! I also have some kitsune power."
Tyler: "Alright! Let's put everything we got on the table!"
Chris: "We got two vampires, one hybrid, a powerful witch, a psychic and a potential kitsune, and an angel. Who the hell needs 100 dead witches!"
Tyler: "I know, right?"
As an indistinct chatter takes place, Samara looks at them with a genuine smile, clearly appreciating their effort to cheer her up.
Misao is walking fiercely. She seems upset about her conversation with Inari. Then she reduces her walking speed, and looks around. She raises her hand, seemingly trying to sense something in the tin air. Then she smiles dangerously, and takes her both hands to a certain point. She seems to be casting a spell, and she seems to be putting an incredible power. But her efforts eventually pay off, and the cloak around several single storey buildings is removed. She then starts walking to one of them. Suddenly she is surrounded by a lot of kitsunes, but they back of when they see it was Misao. One of them asks with confusion what just happened. Misao replies she removed the cloak. The kitsune says that would leave these prisons defenceless (the single storey buildings are apparently prisons). Misao looks viloently, and says that's exactly what she wants to do. Then looks at everyone, and orders them to get other guards and leave this place. The kitsunes, while unable to understand the point of this order, eventually do what they are ordered. After they leave and Misao is left alone, she slowly speaks.
Misao: "Bring it on Damon. Let's see what you got."
Upstairs in the living room, Katherine says the kitsune knows where they are, so whatever spell, barriers, or wings they use, it's pointless. They will come right here, and it's just a matter of time. Instead of wasting their energy to pointless spells and stuff, they have to stick together no matter what. Everybody agrees with that. Chris says maybe he should leave. Samara quickly asks why. Chris replies he is the weak link. Samara put this kitsune protection to everyone's minds, but he can't be effected by witch magic so his mind is perfectly readable. His stay could be their downfall, and as much as he would like to stay and help protect his sister, in this situation he could be more harm then help. Tyler rejects this saying he is an angel. Despite the cons, he is still their greatest weapon. His wings, sensing presence, flight could be a lifesaver. Katherine says she agrees with Tyler. Chris should stay. June says if he is afraid that he might be read by kitsunes, he could stay inside. Aiden already said he and Jay would supply their needs, so under someone's supervision, he should be fine. Katherine looks at June impressed. Then Samara says with a weird smile she would be happy to supervise him. As Samara and Chris look at and smile to each other, Caroline smiles to see them growing closer, despite the craziness going on around.
Elena and Damon enter the strategy room. Nathan, Ulma, Max, Hope, and Bonnie are already inside.
Damon: "Where's Klaus?"
Bonnie: "No one's interested in his company."
Damon makes a face indicating he is fine with that.
Elena: "Should't we call Meredith?"
Ulma: "I thought we should give her some time."
Damon: "Your call. So why are we here?"
Max: "Lady Ulma and I decided we should go back out there. Our stocks are coming to an end, and considering kitsunes were able to find the Ice Lake, I'm not entirely confident we are safe here."
Bonnie: "Tatia said Inari's spell helped her know when the witches left their hideouts. So if she cast the same spell, it won't matter how much time we spend underground. Days, years. The second we go out, she will know."
Damon: "So our stay here is pointless."
Max: "Exactly. We need to get to the Guardian's Gate as soon as possible."
Damon: "You know Shi no Shi is still on our way, right?"
Ulma: "I know. That's why I told my men to get ready for it. One way or another, this time we will finish this."
Elena: "Wait a second! We still have to save Stefan. I won't go anywhere without him and Damon won't go anywhere without me!"
Max: "We know that. That's why we are preparing our men in two units. Once we go outside, Bonnie will cast her locator spell to find Stefan, and one of two units will go with Damon to save him."
Elena: "Why not cast the spell now?"
Bonnie: "I tried. Whatever is in this place that blocks outside, it also blocks inside. I can't cast the spell when I'm here."
Damon: "I don't think it's wise to separate your men in two."
Ulma: "You will need support."
Damon: "No, we will need speed. We went through that back in the Ice Lake."
Nathan: "You still needed our help to get rid of phantoms though."
Damon: "You will go up against Shi no Shi. You need to be full force. And I can't worry about the safety of a bunch of men when I'm trying to save my brother. Klaus and I will go wherever he is, we will save him and come with him. Meanwhile you should be the one to clear our road."
Ulma: "How are we gonna do that?"
Damon: "Get her to use her wings of destruction to blow up the building."
Hope: "Of course! The last time, she said she wouldn't be able to destroy the building without destroying everyone inside. Now there is no one in the building that would matter. She destroys the building along with the kitsunes, it'd be two birds with one stone!"
Ulma: "Especially if Inari is inside!" (this suggestion brings a weird happiness and enthusiasm to everyone in the room) "I love that plan!"
Max: "So what should I do?"
Ulma: "Get everyone ready. Tomorrow we're all going to Shi no Shi, to finish this once and for all."
As Max walks outside, everyone else in the room gets excited in a happy way.
Richard: "So.. Now what?"
Aiden: "Listen Richard. I don't like you and I being at odds, especially because of a common enemy."
Richard: "Good. Then let me out of here."
Aiden: "BUT!, you have to understand me."
Richard: "I'm all ears."
Aiden: "I understand if you don't want any part in helping vampires save the town."
Richard: (chuckles) "Are we back to that?"
Aiden: "These vampires we talk about have done nothing but help so far. You were among the ones who let them live among us as long as they don't hurt anybody."
Richard: "I only voted to see how long they can stand, and they couldn't even do it for one year."
Aiden: "It was not vampires who killed our friends. It was.."
Richard: (interrupts) "The werefoxes. I know, I've heard the story."
Aiden: "It's not just a story, it's the truth."
Richard: "See, I find it difficult to believe."
Aiden: "Trust me Richard, you wouldn't have the moment of doubt if you saw the things I've seen since I became the sheriff."
Richard: "Why don't you tell me?"
Aiden: "Would you believe?" (Richard smiles briefly upon this) "Look, Richard. You're my friend. Not close, but still friend. So for the sake of that, I'm gonna let you out, and I'll give you one chance. Help us, or stay out of our way. Because if I see you plotting or scheming against vampires, this cell will be waiting for you."
Richard: "So we've come to that, huh?"
Aiden: (offers hand) "Deal?"
Richard: (comes as close as he can, and puts his face to the bars) "Do you really know what you're doing? Be honest with me. Do you really know what you're doing?"
Aiden: (remains silent for a moment) "No. But they do."
Richard: "Then I'm sure you can appreciate if I'm having a trouble with handing the fate of my home to my mortal enemy."
Richard: (interrupts) "If this town goes down because of vampires, it's on you. Can you live with that?" (both remain silent for a while and look at each other) "Answer the question and I'll make the deal."
Aiden: "No. I can't. That's why I'm gonna make sure it doesn't."
Richard: (closes his eyes and inhales deeply. Then looks at Aiden) "Deal it is. I won't help vampires, ever. But I will stay out of the way. Until you realize your mistake and decide that you need me."
Upon this they shake hands, and after a tense moment, Aiden opens the cell door and lets Richard go.
He hears footsteps outside his cell. He forces himself to open his eyes, and sees Elena, who is looking at him with sad eyes."
Elena: "Oh my god, Stefan! What have they done to you!"
Stefan: (his voice is incredibly cracked, and words he speak are hardly clear) "Get out of here, Elena!"
Elena: "No, I came here to save you. Tell me how to open this door."
Stefan: "You shouldn't be here."
Elena: "What else am I supposed to do?"
Stefan: "Be safe. I want you to be safe, Elena."
Elena: "Tell me what I can do."
Stefan: (continues to breath heavily, and looks at the chair in the cell) "You can never know.. how many times I found myself.. wanting to break this chair.. and put it's.. wooden leg in my heart.. and end my misery."
Elena: (looks at him curiously) "Why haven't you done it?"
Stefan: (slowly looks at her) "Because I'm hoping.. that one day.. I will see the real you."
Upon this Elena's facial expression changes, and she slowly turns into her original self, Misao. Her face shows that she is feeling pity and sympathy for him. She looks around for a while, then turns into a small animal to get inside the cell. Stefan is startled when the small animal turns into Misao inside the cell.
Stefan: "What are you doing?"
Misao: "You've really broken, Stefan."
Stefan: "Came to gloat?"
Misao briefly smiles upon this, then walks near him and bends knees in front of him.
Misao: "You know, you remind me of someone."
Stefan: "Who was it? Your lover?"
Misao: "No. It was me." (Stefan looks at her, apparently finding this weird) "You remind me of me, who I was before any of this happened. Before Inari came into my life, and took everything I care about from me, until I have nothing left to go back to." (they look at each other) "Inari broke me too, Stefan."
Stefan: "You know, it's not too late. You can still.."
Misao: (laughs briefly, then stands up) "No. It is too late for me." (Stefan tries to look at her) "There is nothing I can do to save myself." (she looks at Stefan) "But maybe I can save a soul."
Misao then bends her knees near Stefan, and offers him her wrist. Stefan looks at her weirdly, clearly thinking there is a catch. But Misao ensures him that it's okay. Upon this Stefan tries to straighten up. Then holds her hand, looks at Misao once more, and when she nods to him, he makes his fangs appear and bites her wrist. She startles with his teeth piercing her skin, but it's not as painful as she thought, even relaxing at one point. Stefan drinks her blood for a while, and when he realizes there is nothing fishy, he continues drinking. As he drinks, his skin gets better, and he slowly turns into his originals self. After a while Misao starts to get dizzy, and tells Stefan to stop. But Stefan continues drinking wildly. Misao repeats herself, but when Stefan doesn't stop again, she pushes him away and stands up quickly. Stefan looks at her wildly, with a little blood dripping from his mouth. Then he comes to his senses and slowly cleans the blood, while Misao uses clearly intense magic to heal her wrist. Then they look at each other.
Misao: "See? That's much better."
Stefan: (with confusion) "Why did you do this?"
Misao: "Because I can relate. I didn't want you to lose the one thing you have left." (Stefan looks at him silently) "Hope, Stefan. I didn't want you to lose your hope. Among all the craziness that's been happening, it's always good to have something to hold on to. And you were about to let go." (then she turns into same small animal to go out of the cage. Once she is out and turns back to her original form, she looks at Stefan) "I did what I did, because I didn't want to stay back and watch that happen. Without hope, we are all lost."
Then she walks away. Stefan looks behind her, unable to understand what made her have this sudden change of heart.
